Just saw something on the way to work today that made me think. There was a banner with a very thin font printed in white against a medium blue background.
Because the font was so thin, you could not read what is was saying for what was a really short distance. The banner must have been at least 4×10, so it was not a matter of it being too small. It also had a thick font in white on the same background that was easily read.
I think that if you want to use a modern thin style font, you need to stick to doing so using a primary color on a white background. That should make it readable. Just remember, don’t let your design get in the way of your message.
